The Martini & Rossi company received its name in 1879 from Alessandro Martini and Luigi Rossi, who in the 1860s took over leadership of the Distilleria Nazionale di Spirito di Vino in Turin. This distillery had been founded by local wine producers in 1840. Luigi Rossi was a talented herbalist with knowledge of wine making and Alessandro Martini was a spirited entrepreneur who had been operating his own small vineyard. . Their company was to become famous around the world. In the 1850s, Rossi developed a new vermouth recipe which brought great success to the Turin distillery, then still Distilleria Nazionale. The vermouth won prizes in several countries and in 1868, it even became a royal beverage: King Victor Emmanuel II authorized the company to place the House of Savoy’s arms on its label. Under Rossi’s heirs, who took over the company in 1930, Martini & Rossi grew to international fame and the scarlet-hued Martini Rosso became an icon.
