LUZERN Kappellbrücke - Lucerne, CH

The Kapellbrücke („chapel bridge“), crossing the river Reuss in Lucerne, is the oldest wooden bridge and second-longest covered bridge in Europe. It was built in 1365 and connects the older part of the city with the newer part. After a fire in 1993, much of the bridge had to be rebuilt. The octagonal tower beside the bridge is called Wasserturm (“water tower”). Built in 1300, it has been used as a watchtower, prison, torture chamber and treasury. Today, it is used as the guildhall of the Lucerne artillery association and accommodates a souvenir shop. The Kapellbrücke with the Wasserturm is the symbol of Lucerne and one of the most-photographed monuments in Switzerland.
