The Swiss chocolate manufacturers Lindt & Sprüngli are still the “Maîtres Chocolatiers“ they were in 1845. That is when it all started, in a small confectionery shop in the old town of Zurich. David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his son Rudolf decided to make chocolate in solid form, a fashionable trend from Italy. They were extremely successful and opened a larger shop on the Paradeplatz in Zurich, as well as a chocolate factory in Kilchberg. In 1899, Sprüngli acquired Rodolphe Lindt’s chocolate factory in Berne (along with the manufacturing secrets). In 1879, Lindt had invented the conche, a technique to make the most delicate “melting chocolate” which contributed to the worldwide fame of Swiss chocolate. Lindt & Sprüngli became world famous and integrated numerous companies all over the world. Today Lindt is the market leader in premium chocolates.
