Hamol cream, whose name comes from its ingredient hamamelis extract, was already produced in 1911 by pharmacist Julius Otto Maag in Stein am Rhein, Switzerland. The Hamol company was founded in 1928 and later moved to Zurich. In the 1930s, when sunbathing was becoming popular, the “Hamol ultra” suntan lotion was developed. The product was hugely popular and many marvellous posters were designed to advertise it.
