Gotthardbahn - Gotthard Railway

The Gotthard railway line runs through the Swiss Alps up to an altitude of 1150 metres and includes the famous original almost 16 km Gotthard tunnel. The full Gotthard railway line was opened following completion of the tunnel in 1872, after ten years of construction work. Its historic importance for the region is hard to overstate. The Gotthard railway line, besides being the engineering feat of the century for Switzerland, provided an important North-South transport link for Europe and had a huge impact on tourism and the exchange of goods. The railway was electrified in 1922. In 2016, the new 57-km Gotthard base tunnel was opened – the longest railway tunnel in the world.
