In 1907, Heinrich Burkhardt founded the “Magazine zum Globus” (Globus warehouses) in Zurich. He had bought J. Webers Bazar (founded by Josef Weber in 1892 as the first large warehouse in Switzerland), expanded it and renamed it. In 1997, the company with its 13 department stores in all major Swiss cities was bought by Migros. Globus stores sell mostly upscale goods, including clothing, cosmetics, jewellery and household supplies, and are noted for their extensive delicatessen section. In early summer 2020, Globus was sold to the luxury department store group around the Austrian Signa Group and the Thai Central Group with the objective to realign Globus in the luxury segment.
