General Dynamics

General Dynamics, an American aerospace and defence corporation, was established in 1952 as a parent company for the Electric Boat submarine company and the aircraft manufacturer Canadair. General Dynamics built planes, tanks, rockets, missiles, submarines, warships, electronics and medical instruments mainly for the U.S. government, and was at the forefront of scientific research including nuclear energy, electronics, aerodynamics and space dynamics. In 1955, the graphic designer Erik Nitsche was hired to design a series of posters that would promote the corporation during the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, showing the company’s various branches of research in the latest technologies. Nitsche created more posters, brochures, advertisements, annual reports and a book for the company until 1960. Nitsche’s General Dynamics posters, rare icons of the “Atomic age”, are now in museum collections and highly prized by collectors. The complete collection is very hard to compile.
