Elm, Glarus, CH

Elm is a small village in the canton of Glarus and lies at the southernmost end of the valley of the Sernf. Twice a year, crowds gather there to watch a beautiful natural spectacle: on 13 and 14 May and on 30 September and 1 October, the rising sun shines through the “Martinsloch”, a natural hole in the Tschingelhorn mountain. The rays of the sun fall directly onto the steeple of the church in Elm. The spectacle lasts for two and a half minutes; then the sun disappears again behind the mountain before finally rising ten minutes later. The village has a unique and characteristic appearance, for which it received a national distinction in 1975. Elm is also well known because of its mineral water and its soft drink called „Elmer Citro“ and as the home of Vreni Schneider, several-times world champion in skiing.
