Caran d’Ache – known worldwide for its fine writing implements – is best known to us for crayons, coloured pencils and paint boxes. Near the French border, in Thônex near Geneva, the coloured pencils are made with pigments from companies such as Clariant, Ciba or BASF. In an agitator, they are processed into a thick mass with minerals and binding agents. This mass is then rolled into wafer-thin flakes and finally compressed in a press with over 100 tons of pressure. An infinitely long "spaghetti strip" slides out of it, which a machine cuts to the length of a pen. To ensure that the pencil leads write smoothly, they are dried for 8 hours in a basket at 100 degrees Celsius and immersed in an oil bath for 24 hours. Arnold Schweitzer bought the Ecridor pencil factory, which was founded in 1915, in 1924 and changed its name to Caran d’Ache. The Russian word "Karandasch" means pencil. The first watercolour pencils were created in 1931 under the name Prismalo, the first wax crayons (Neocolor) in 1952 and the first ballpoint pens a year later. In 1978, diversification into the accessories sector began with a collection of lighters. Caran d’Ache has boutiques around the world, including in Moscow, Harrods in London and Asia, and intends to step up into the luxury segment in the future with products such as fine leather goods and Swarovski crystal fountain pens.
