The Bürgenstock resort is a famous holiday destination high above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland. Between 1873 and 1905, the first hotels, a funicular railway, a footpath along the cliff and the Hammetschwand lift (Europe’s highest outdoor lift) were built on the Bürgenstock. This was an amazing feat at the time, for all the construction was completed by hand! The three hotels – Grand Hotel Bürgenstock, the Park Hotel and the Palace Hotel – became very popular with wealthy travellers from all around the world, who came to enjoy the spectacular views. In 1928, an alpine golf course was added, followed by tennis courts, shops, a post office, a news agency and an outdoor heated swimming pool. In the 1950s, many celebrities came to the Bürgenstock, including Konrad Adenauer, Pandit Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi, Kofi Annan, Sean Connery, Rod Stewart, Helena Rubinstein and Sophia Loren. Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer even celebrated their wedding there. In 2007, the Bürgenstock hotels were acquired by the Barwa Real Estate Company from Qatar. After extensive renovation and building work, the resort was reopened in 2017.
