Braunwald, Kanton Glarus, CH

Braunwald is situated 1,256 metres high on a mountain plateau in the canton of Glarus. It is a popular holiday resort because it is car-free and can only be reached via the Braunwaldbahn, a funicular railway that was established in 1907. Moreover, Braunwald has the infrastructure of a large ski resort but retains the charm of an idyllic winter sports resort. The oldest written record of the name „Brunwald“ goes back to 1421. The name denoted a region with many forests and springs. The town of Braunwald developed out of a gathering of houses around the mountain station of the Braunwaldbahn and became an autonomous municipality in 1939. Braunwald’s local mountain is the Ortstock, a popular destination for excursions because of the great panoramic view. What used to be the once oldest chair lift in Switzerland took travellers up to the Gumen at the foot of the three Eggstock summits to the north of Braunwald. It was built in 1947 and replaced in 2007. It was (and still is) famous for its sideways seats, allowing better views of the Alpine landscape.
