Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was born in 1875 in Livorno, Italy and died in 1942 in Cannes, France. In 1898 he moved to Paris and became known through his caricatures of famous artists of the time, such as Yvette Guilbert. Around 1900 he started designing posters and soon became the most famous poster designer of his generation in France, following in the footsteps of Chéret and Toulouse-Lautrec. His large-format colour lithographs initially featured the typical elegant Parisian women. He created the brand images of numerous products such as beverages, laundry detergents and automobiles and used an increasingly object-oriented, expressive and illustrative style that was often also provocative or humoristic.
