Fritz Butz

Fritz Butz was born in Württemberg in 1909 and emigrated to Switzerland with his family in 1914. From 1929 to 1931 he attended the graphic design class at the Weissendorf academy in Stuttgart. Upon graduating he started working as a graphic designer and painter and took commissions from various Swiss companies and organisations. In 1934 he began to design stage sets; he worked for theatres including the Cabaret Cornichon from 1934 to 1949 and the Schauspielhaus Zurich from 1948 to 1977. In 1946 Butz was naturalised as a Swiss citizen. After a long and successful career as a versatile and highly sought-after graphic and stage-set designer, Butz retired and devoted himself only to painting from 1981. He died in Schwerzenbach in 1989. Fritz Butz’ poster designs and paintings are characterized by a colourful lightness, humour and joie de vivre.
